The Foliage is Beautiful, But When Do We Eat?

 I think I’ll engage in a game of snooker,

To occupy my mind while I wait for the slow cooker,

To yield a dish guaranteed to make my heartbeat quicken.

Something with pumpkin and parsnips and chicken,

And cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves,

That makes me swear all kinds of oaths

To the big fella in the heavens above

Who at this time of year—every year—shows his love

In the form of apples, brussels sprouts and squash

And other lip-smacking culinary bounty. Gosh,

Just thinking of all these victuals makes me hunger

For days of old when I was younger

And could eat without worrying ‘bout packin’ on the pounds.

Why I gain weight from all this healthy fare astounds (and confounds).

Then from deep in my conscience I hear a little voice utter,

“Maybe it’s because of all the brown sugar, maple syrup and butter?”

Perhaps that’s so. After all to this “diet thing,” I’m not exactly a beginner.

I think I’ll start again tomorrow.  Is it time yet? I want to celebrate the joys of

autumn as they pertain to dinner!
